Missouri and Illinois wake up under a gray ceiling as low clouds stretch across the St. Louis skyline. Temperatures hover near 40 degrees at Lambert Airport, and the air feels damp but calm.

Clouds hold firm through much of the day with highs climbing to 52 degrees. Winds stay light, which keeps travel smooth along I-64, I-44, and I-55. Roads remain dry through the afternoon commute.

Rain chances increase later tonight. A 50 percent chance of rain develops mainly between late evening and early morning. Lows dip to around 36 degrees. While temperatures stay above freezing, bridges and elevated surfaces could cool quickly if heavier showers fall.

Thursday trends brighter. Clouds gradually break with highs near 54. By Friday, sunshine returns in full force and temperatures surge to 69 degrees. That’s a noticeable spring tease heading toward early March.

The weekend stays mild at first. Saturday reaches 63 with mostly sunny skies. By Saturday night, a slight rain chance returns as lows settle near 33. Sunday turns more unsettled. Rain develops before noon, then a rain and snow mix becomes possible as colder air filters in. Highs reach near 46, but falling temperatures Sunday night could allow wet pavement to refreeze.

This is the time of year when flash freezing becomes a concern. Meltwater or rain can harden into slick patches quickly after sunset.

Early next week cools back into the 40s with additional rain chances Monday and Tuesday. Longer-range signals suggest fluctuating temperatures into early March.
