Quincy, Illinois – Snow and powerful wind gusts up to 45 mph are creating slick roads across west-central Illinois and northeast Missouri early Monday, raising the risk for hazardous travel during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Monday for Adams, Brown, and Pike counties in Illinois and Knox, Lewis, Shelby, Marion, Monroe, Ralls, and Pike counties in Missouri. Additional snowfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected before the system exits the region.
Communities including Quincy, Hannibal, Mount Sterling, Pittsfield, and Bowling Green could see snow-covered roads combined with strong winds capable of blowing snow across highways and reducing visibility. The gusty conditions may also bring down small tree limbs in exposed areas.
Drivers along U.S. 36, U.S. 24, and Missouri Route 79, as well as regional rural roadways, should expect slick pavement and sudden visibility drops during heavier bursts of snow before sunrise.
Transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check road conditions before heading out. Illinois travelers can monitor updates through the state’s road system at GettingAroundIllinois, while Missouri drivers can use MoDOT’s traveler map for real-time conditions.
Conditions should gradually improve after sunrise Monday as snowfall tapers off and winds begin to weaken.
