Missouri–Illinois Snow Today: St. Louis Sees 3–5 Inches, Travel Slows

Missouri–Illinois – Wet flakes swirl under early lights across the St. Louis metro as a thick, gray sky settles in ahead of today’s winter push. Pavement shines with water and slush, and wind carries bursts of heavier snow across bridges and open stretches. Anyone traveling for post-Thanksgiving return plans should expect delays, especially along I-70, I-55, and I-64.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 12 a.m. Sunday, with 3–5 inches of total snow possible across southern and southwest Illinois and eastern Missouri. Gusts up to 35 mph may create spotty whiteouts and drifting, especially west of the Mississippi River and on exposed interstate ramps. Precipitation shifts between rain, snow, and a brief wintry mix through the afternoon before temperatures fall again, allowing snow to stack more steadily.

Drivers should prepare for slick conditions by midday. Use low beams, keep extra space between vehicles, and expect slush on bridges and elevated lanes where temperatures cool fastest. Meteorologists note that the highest impact window lasts from late morning through evening as heavier snow bands brush the metro.

Models also suggest a colder December pattern building across the central U.S. next week. Light snow may return Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning, bringing a small “winter tease” for early-December commuters. Farther north, a stronger December 4–8 system may deliver heavy snow to parts of the Midwest, and cold air behind that front could drop temperatures well below normal from Minnesota to Ohio, extending into Missouri.

Today’s system will gradually wind down after nightfall, but untreated surfaces may refreeze as temperatures dip into the low 20s.
