St. Louis, Missouri – A sweltering heat wave gripping Missouri and Illinois is expected to last through 9 p.m. Tuesday, with heat index values soaring up to 105 degrees and raising serious health concerns across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the heat advisory covers more than 40 counties from Quincy, Illinois to Farmington, Missouri. The combination of high humidity and triple-digit temperatures may lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those working outdoors or without access to air conditioning.

Major metro areas including St. Louis, Columbia, Jefferson City, and Quincy are all under the advisory. Local officials urge residents to avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, drink water frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors and family members. Children and pets should never be left in vehicles, even briefly.

Outdoor workers are especially vulnerable; OSHA recommends frequent breaks in shaded or cool environments. Early symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, heavy sweating, and nausea — anyone experiencing these signs should seek a cooler place immediately.

The advisory remains in effect until Tuesday evening, but additional alerts may be issued if conditions persist.
