Cape Girardeau, Mo. – Triple-digit heat is gripping the Missouri-Illinois border, with heat index values soaring as high as 106°F through Friday evening, prompting an urgent advisory for millions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT Friday for all of southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, and western Kentucky. Cities including Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Paducah, and Evansville are experiencing the first prolonged stretch of heat and humidity this summer, raising risks of heat-related illnesses.

In southern Illinois, communities from Mount Vernon to Metropolis are seeing peak afternoon index values above 100°F. The same sweltering conditions extend south through Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, and New Madrid, Missouri. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid outdoor labor during peak hours, hydrate frequently, and check on elderly neighbors and pets.

Health officials warn that the effects will compound daily, with heat stress increasing with each day of exposure. Wear light clothing, avoid direct sunlight during midday, and seek air-conditioned spaces.

The advisory could be extended if dangerous heat lingers into the weekend. Stay tuned to local emergency alerts and prepare for additional heat-related advisories across the region.
