St. Louis, Missouri – Heavy rain is expected to drench parts of Illinois and northeast Missouri starting Sunday afternoon, with a Flood Watch in effect for nearly two dozen counties through Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, multiple rounds of thunderstorms may produce intense rainfall rates, leading to flash flooding across areas including Edwardsville, Quincy, Hannibal, and Mount Sterling. The Flood Watch begins as early as 2 a.m. Sunday in west-central Illinois and northeast Missouri, and expands to additional regions from 5 p.m. onward.

Low-lying roads, urban neighborhoods with poor drainage, and small creeks are at high risk for flooding, especially where storms repeat over the same locations. Affected counties include Adams, Pike, Greene, Fayette, Clinton, and Marion, among others.

Residents should prepare for potential road closures and avoid driving through water-covered streets. Keep cellphones charged, secure outdoor items, and monitor emergency alerts throughout the day. This system follows a stormy July pattern, with moisture-rich air fueling back-to-back downpours.

Warnings remain in effect until at least 1 p.m. Monday, and more alerts may follow if rainfall totals exceed 2 to 4 inches in some spots.
