Platte City, MO – A disturbance along Missouri Highway 45 led to a two-hour shutdown Wednesday afternoon after authorities investigated reports of a man possibly firing a shot near Baker Road.

According to the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 1:45 p.m. after a caller reported a man sitting in the northbound lane of MO-45 inside a black sedan with its hazard lights on. Witnesses told authorities the man was attempting to flag down drivers and may have entered vehicles before deputies arrived. A shot was also reportedly fired during the incident.

Deputies said they located the man, who was unharmed but incoherent and appeared to be experiencing a severe mental health crisis. He was detained and taken to a local hospital for evaluation, where he was placed on a 96-hour involuntary mental health hold.

Investigators confirmed they recovered a spent shell casing along with an unfired round of ammunition from the scene. Authorities closed the highway for about two hours while examining the area.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office is now asking for assistance from the public. Anyone who traveled on Highway 45 near Jones Myer Road and the Village of Farley between 1:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. Wednesday and saw anything unusual is urged to contact the sheriff’s office’s non-emergency line at 816-858-3521, referencing case number 01-25-02965.

No injuries were reported, and deputies have not confirmed if the recovered ammunition was linked to the alleged gunfire.
