Springfield, Missouri – A dangerous stretch of summertime heat continues to grip southwest Missouri, with heat index values soaring as high as 108° through Sunday night. Afternoon temperatures across the Springfield area will consistently reach the upper 90s, creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors.

According to the US National Weather Service in Springfield, daily high temperatures from Thursday through Sunday will range from 92° to 99°, with overnight lows offering little relief in the mid-70s. The heat index—what it actually feels like outside—will hover between 99° and 108° each afternoon. Rain chances remain very low, further intensifying the risk for heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Communities including Springfield, Branson, Joplin, and Rolla should expect hot, sunny conditions, especially from late morning through early evening. Local hospitals and emergency services are urging residents to avoid strenuous activity outdoors, check on neighbors and pets, and stay hydrated. Those without air conditioning are encouraged to visit cooling centers or public buildings.

The National Weather Service warns that this prolonged heatwave can quickly become dangerous, particularly for children, seniors, and outdoor workers. The high heat index values are similar to previous July heat waves, which have led to increased emergency calls and power outages in the region.

Heat advisories remain in effect for all of southwest Missouri through Sunday, with more updates possible if conditions worsen. Stay tuned for further alerts and take steps now to protect yourself from the extreme heat.
