St. Louis, MO – An intense heat wave is set to hit central Missouri, with temperatures expected to exceed 105°F on Monday and Tuesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Heat Advisory for Monday afternoon and early evening, urging residents to take precautions.

According to the NWS, the advisory will likely be reissued for Tuesday, expanding to cover most of the area. Dangerous heat index values will create hazardous conditions. Officials recommend frequent breaks in air-conditioned environments, staying hydrated, applying sunscreen, and avoiding strenuous activities. Residents are advised to wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Compounding the issue, the Hannibal NOAA Weather Radio transmitter is currently offline due to a telecommunications outage. According to the NWS, technicians are working to resolve the issue, but the radio will be out of service until at least Tuesday, June 25. This affects Northeast Missouri and West-Central Illinois, including Lewis, Adams, Shelby, Marion, Pike, Monroe, and Ralls counties.

The outage poses a significant risk as residents rely on these broadcasts for emergency weather updates. NWS urges residents to use alternative methods to stay informed, such as mobile apps and local news.

Staying informed and taking necessary precautions is crucial to ensure safety during this dangerous heat event. Residents should remain vigilant and seek ways to stay cool and hydrated.
