Springfield, Missouri – A sweltering stretch of summer heat is moving into Missouri, with heat indices expected to climb into the lower 100s by midweek, making outdoor activity potentially dangerous without proper precautions.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, daily highs will range from the upper 80s to around 90°F starting Sunday, with humidity pushing the heat index into the 90–100°F danger zone Tuesday through Thursday. Overnight lows in the upper 60s to low 70s will offer little relief.

Communities across southwest Missouri—including Joplin, Branson, and Rolla—should expect muggy conditions to intensify, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours. Health officials recommend avoiding strenuous outdoor work, drinking plenty of water, and checking on vulnerable neighbors and pets.

Cooling centers in Greene, Jasper, and Christian counties may see increased use as the heat lingers. Drivers should avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles, even briefly.

This is one of the first extended hot spells of the season, and officials warn conditions could worsen if drier ground elevates temperatures further.

High heat is expected to continue into late week. Additional advisories may be issued if humidity increases or if overnight lows fail to drop below 75°F.
