St. Louis, Mo. – Sweltering heat continues to grip Missouri this weekend with temperatures climbing into the mid-90s through Tuesday, raising concerns for anyone with outdoor plans. Relief is on the way, but not until midweek when thunderstorms bring cooler air back into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, highs will remain between 91 and 95 degrees through Tuesday, with a 10 to 20 percent chance of afternoon storms. By Wednesday, storm chances increase to 20 to 40 percent as a system moves through, knocking highs back into the 80s by Thursday and Friday.

The prolonged heat will push heat indices near the upper 90s, especially in urban areas such as downtown St. Louis, Columbia, and Jefferson City. Health officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during the afternoon, and check on vulnerable neighbors who may not have reliable cooling.

Drivers should also prepare for heavy downpours and possible lightning by midweek as storms become more widespread. Outdoor events may face delays, and scattered power outages are possible with stronger storms Wednesday into Friday.

The National Weather Service said storm chances will linger into the end of the week, with additional advisories possible.
