Kansas City, Missouri – Early summer heat could catch Missourians off guard Saturday, with heat index values soaring into the low 90s across much of the state, including Kansas City and St. Joseph by mid-afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, heat index levels will peak between 3 and 6 p.m. today, reaching 90°F to 92°F in cities such as Lee’s Summit, Leavenworth, and Olathe. Though not classified as a heat wave, this “early season” warmth poses real health risks, especially since residents haven’t yet acclimated to hotter conditions.

Kansas City and Overland Park are expected to see heat index values around 90° starting at 3 p.m., with little relief until after 8 p.m. St. Joseph could climb as high as 92° by 5 p.m. Children, older adults, and outdoor workers are at elevated risk for heat-related illnesses during these moderate but deceptive spikes.

Health officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid overexertion during peak heat, and never leave pets or people in vehicles. Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, especially if engaging in outdoor activities.

This early summer heat pattern is expected to ease by Sunday, but warm and humid conditions will linger into early next week.
