Columbia, Missouri – A dangerous stretch of extreme heat will grip much of Missouri and Illinois through Tuesday night, with heat index values soaring past 100 degrees and raising the risk of heat-related illness.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, a Heat Advisory is in effect from noon Friday in central Missouri and from noon Saturday across southern and western Illinois. The advisory includes major cities like Columbia, Jefferson City, Quincy, Farmington, and Centralia, and lasts until 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Temperatures in the mid-90s, combined with high humidity, will create oppressive heat index values that can be especially dangerous for outdoor workers, older adults, and children. The advisory covers key counties including Boone, Audrain, Monroe, Callaway, Macoupin, Randolph, and Washington.
Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Outdoor work should be rescheduled to early mornings or evenings, with frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, per OSHA guidelines.
The heat dome is expected to linger through early next week, with only minimal overnight relief. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen.
