Kansas City, Missouri – 22°F temperatures are expected to damage crops across Missouri and eastern Kansas by 9 a.m. Saturday, threatening agriculture and outdoor plumbing during the early morning hours. Sub-freezing conditions will develop overnight and persist through the morning commute, creating widespread frost capable of killing sensitive vegetation and stressing early-season crops.

According to the National Weather Service, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday across a large portion of Missouri and eastern Kansas, including Kansas City, St. Joseph, and surrounding communities. Temperatures could fall as low as 22 degrees in rural areas, with metro locations still dropping well below freezing.

The cold air mass extends far beyond Missouri, impacting much of the Midwest and Ohio Valley. In Kentucky, including Louisville and Lexington, lows between 24 and 27 degrees are expected from midnight through 10 a.m. Saturday. Similar conditions will affect southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky, where cities like Evansville, Paducah, and Cape Girardeau face widespread frost development.

Across eastern Kentucky and into West Virginia and southwest Virginia, temperatures near 25 degrees will persist through mid-morning Saturday, increasing the risk of crop damage in valleys and low-lying areas. Gardeners and farmers are urged to cover plants, bring sensitive vegetation indoors, and insulate exposed pipes.

Drivers should also be alert for patchy frost on bridges and overpasses early Saturday, especially in rural areas where temperatures drop fastest.

The freeze threat will ease by late Saturday morning as temperatures climb above freezing, but additional cold nights remain possible, and further advisories could be issued as conditions evolve.
