Springfield, Mo. – Drivers and residents across southern and central Missouri could wake up to dangerous flash flooding early Sunday, as intense overnight storms dump up to 7 inches of rain in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Springfield, St. Louis, and Paducah, a Flood Watch is in effect from 1 a.m. through early Sunday afternoon for over a dozen counties, including Pulaski, Phelps, Texas, Howell, Dent, Douglas, Reynolds, and Carter. Rain totals are expected to range from 1 to 3 inches, with localized areas possibly receiving double that amount.
Low-lying roads, small creeks, and flood-prone crossings—particularly in rural areas like Van Buren, Doniphan, and Mountain Grove—could quickly become hazardous. Emergency managers urge drivers to avoid flooded roads and prepare for rapidly rising streams overnight. Flash Flood Warnings may be issued with little notice.
The watch also covers Rolla, Lebanon, Ava, and West Plains, where saturated ground may worsen runoff impacts. Residents should secure outdoor items, clear storm drains, and charge phones and flashlights in case of power disruptions.
More thunderstorms remain possible into Sunday afternoon. Flash Flood Watches remain active through at least 1 p.m., with additional alerts likely if rainfall continues.
