Kansas City, Missouri – Heavy rain and repeated thunderstorms could drench much of northern and central Missouri and northeast Kansas starting Thursday afternoon, triggering flash flooding and potential river overflow through Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a Flood Watch goes into effect at 4 p.m. Thursday and remains active through early Saturday in counties across both states, including Buchanan, Jackson, Johnson (KS and MO), Clay, Atchison, and Macon. Forecasters warn of excessive runoff flooding roads, low-lying land, and poorly drained urban areas.

Parts of the Kansas City metro—especially in Wyandotte and Johnson counties—could see multiple rounds of heavy rain through early Friday. Rural areas like Livingston, Grundy, and Gentry counties are also at risk, with saturated soils primed for flash flooding.

Drivers should avoid low-water crossings and flooded roadways. Residents in flood-prone zones are urged to prepare by clearing drains, moving valuables to higher ground, and charging devices in case of power outages.

Additional flood warnings may be issued if rainfall rates intensify or if rivers exceed flood stage. Stay alert—conditions may change rapidly.

⚠️ Flood Watch remains in effect through at least 4 a.m. Saturday for northern Missouri and through 10 a.m. Friday for central counties.
