Kansas City, Missouri – Urban flooding and swollen creeks could hit the Kansas City metro and much of northern Missouri Thursday evening as a widespread Flood Watch goes into effect for over 40 counties across Missouri and eastern Kansas.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, the Flood Watch begins at 4 p.m. Thursday and continues through 10 a.m. Friday, covering key areas including Jackson, Clay, Platte, Buchanan, and Johnson counties, along with parts of northeast Kansas like Leavenworth and Atchison. Forecasters warn that multiple rounds of heavy rainfall could lead to rapid runoff, especially in low-lying zones and urban corridors.

Communities along rivers and creeks, such as the Missouri, Blue, and Platte Rivers, may see quick rises. Major roadways like I-70, US-69, and I-435 could become hazardous during evening and early morning commutes. Local emergency officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways and check travel conditions before leaving home.

Residents should clear storm drains, monitor weather alerts, and have emergency kits ready, especially in flood-prone basements or areas with past water issues.

The heaviest rainfall is expected Thursday night into early Friday, with more flood advisories possible as storms develop.
