Springfield, MO – A multi-day storm system is forecast to bring several inches of rain to southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Flood Watch for the region from Friday evening through Monday.
Communities across more than 60 counties, including Springfield, Joplin, Rolla, Branson and Lebanon, are advised to prepare for potential flooding due to excessive rainfall. Southeast Kansas counties, including Bourbon, Cherokee, and Crawford, are also under the advisory.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the weekend, bringing rainfall totals between 2 to 5 inches in most areas. Isolated locations could see as much as 8 inches, with the heaviest rainfall anticipated across southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri.
Officials warn that excessive runoff could lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying areas. Low-water crossings may become impassable, and residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to have emergency plans in place.
The Flood Watch is scheduled to remain in effect through Monday evening. Weather authorities recommend closely monitoring forecasts and being prepared to respond to any Flood Warnings issued over the weekend.
Motorists are reminded to never attempt to drive through flooded roadways and to use caution when traveling in areas experiencing heavy rainfall.
