Springfield, MO – A flood watch is in effect for Springfield and surrounding areas as heavy rainfall is expected to continue into the weekend. Starting Thursday morning, excessive rainfall is anticipated across much of central and southwest Missouri, with up to 6 inches of rain, potentially leading to flooding and flash flooding.

According to the National Weather Service, the flood watch will remain in effect from 7 a.m. Thursday through Saturday evening. Local authorities are warning residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions as heavy rain is expected to affect roadways and low-lying areas. Flooding could impact rivers, creeks, and streams, especially in the cities of Springfield, Lebanon, and Waynesville, and counties like Greene, Pulaski, and Laclede.

Rain is forecasted to taper off by Saturday, but not before snow returns. Snow is expected to develop overnight Saturday into Sunday, bringing a significant temperature drop and icy conditions. Accumulations of snow could affect travel across the region, especially along highways like Interstate 44.

Travelers are advised to monitor the weather and adjust plans accordingly, as sudden changes in weather could cause hazardous conditions, particularly on roads that are already prone to flooding. The National Weather Service also recommends checking for updated alerts and ensuring that homes are prepared for potential flooding in low-lying areas.

The weather forecast for Springfield includes temperatures in the low 60s through Friday, with showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. By the weekend, however, a cold front will bring colder air and snow showers.

Stay informed, stay safe, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions in the days ahead.
