Kirksville, MO – Residents across northeast Missouri are waking up to dangerous cold conditions Monday morning as a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for parts of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, very cold wind chills as low as 17 degrees below zero are expected through 10 a.m. CST Monday, creating a heightened risk of frostbite and hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken.

The advisory covers Putnam, Adair, and Schuyler counties, including the cities of Kirksville, Lancaster, Unionville, Queen City, Greentop, Glenwood, and Downing. Officials say the coldest conditions are occurring during the early-morning hours, especially in open and rural areas where winds are stronger.

Meteorologists warn that exposure to these temperatures—even for short periods—can be dangerous. Frostbite can occur quickly on exposed skin, and prolonged time outdoors increases the risk of hypothermia.

Residents are urged to limit time outside, dress in multiple layers, and wear hats and gloves. Drivers should also keep emergency supplies in their vehicles and allow extra time during the morning commute.

Temperatures and wind chills are expected to gradually improve later this morning as winds ease and daytime heating begins. Until then, officials stress caution for anyone traveling or working outdoors.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and heed all weather advisories as this burst of Arctic air continues to impact northeast Missouri.
