Kirksville, Missouri – Life-threatening cold is spreading across northern Missouri as Arctic air drives wind chills to dangerous levels, putting anyone outdoors at risk for frostbite early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, Extreme Cold Warnings are in effect across northern Missouri, including Kirksville, Bethany, Maryville, Trenton, and surrounding communities. Wind chills are expected to fall between 20 and 25 below zero overnight into Friday morning, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

The harshest conditions will be felt across northern counties near the Iowa border, where winds and deep cold combine to accelerate heat loss. Even short periods outside, such as warming a vehicle or walking pets, could become dangerous without full winter protection. Farther south, very cold conditions will continue through Friday afternoon as wind chills remain well below zero.

Emergency officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers including hats, face coverings, and insulated gloves, and bring pets indoors. Officials also warn that cold-related vehicle issues and frozen pipes are possible, especially in homes without adequate insulation.

Extreme Cold Warnings remain in effect through Friday morning, with cold weather advisories continuing into Saturday as the Arctic air mass slowly eases its grip on Missouri.
