Springfield, MO – Residents of Missouri should prepare for dangerously low temperatures this week as an arctic blast moves through the region. Forecasts indicate sub-zero wind chills as low as -6 degrees by Tuesday morning, with icy conditions posing significant hazards to travel and outdoor activity.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Springfield, overnight lows will dip into the teens Monday night, while daytime highs Tuesday will struggle to reach 39 degrees. Wind chill values will make it feel significantly colder, with frostbite risks increasing for exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Black ice remains a concern for commuters as re-freezing snowmelt may create slick conditions on roads and highways, including I-44 and US Route 65.
The cold spell will persist through the week, with highs reaching only the mid-40s by Thursday. Nights will stay frigid, with lows near 15 degrees Monday and 21 degrees Tuesday. By Friday, a slight warming trend is expected, but another round of freezing conditions is possible over the weekend.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Pets should be brought indoors to prevent frostbite. Drivers should allow extra time for commutes and stay updated on road conditions.
