Kansas City, MO – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for parts of eastern Kansas and western Missouri from noon to 8 p.m. CDT on Monday due to warm, dry, and windy conditions that could rapidly spread fires.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, the warning covers numerous counties, including Atchison, Miami, Johnson, and Wyandotte in Kansas, as well as Buchanan, Jackson, Clay, and Lafayette in Missouri. Fire Weather Zones 025, 057, 060, 102-105 in Kansas and 001-008, 011-017, 020-024, 028-031, 037-038, and 043 in Missouri are all under alert.
Southwest winds are expected to reach 10 to 15 mph with gusts of up to 30 mph. Combined with humidity levels between 15% and 25%, these conditions could allow fires to ignite and spread quickly. Officials warn that outdoor burning is not recommended, as any fire that develops may become uncontrollable.
Residents are urged to take precautions, including avoiding activities that could spark fires, securing outdoor equipment, and heeding local burn bans. Fire departments across the region are on heightened alert for potential wildfire outbreaks.
The Red Flag Warning replaces the previous Fire Weather Watch and highlights an increased fire danger. Officials advise staying informed through local weather updates and emergency management agencies.
