St. Louis, MO – A widespread flood watch is in effect across eastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois as several rounds of thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy rainfall through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the flood watch begins Friday evening and remains in place until 7 p.m. Sunday. Forecast models indicate that most areas could receive 2 to 4 inches of rain, with isolated spots seeing as much as 6 inches. The heaviest rainfall is expected along and just north of the Interstate 44 corridor, which includes the St. Louis metro area.
The watch includes over 30 counties, spanning major cities like St. Louis, Columbia, Jefferson City, Edwardsville, Belleville, and Alton. Low-lying areas, creeks, streams, and flood-prone roads are at particular risk for flash flooding throughout the weekend.
Officials urge residents to stay alert and avoid driving through flooded roads. “Turn around, don’t drown,” remains a critical safety reminder during flooding events.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and be ready to act if flash flood warnings are issued. Emergency kits, sandbags, and evacuation plans should be prepared in vulnerable areas. Rainfall may linger through late Sunday before clearing into the new week.
