St. Louis, MO – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for eastern Missouri and parts of southwest Illinois from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday due to strong winds and low humidity, creating dangerous fire conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the affected areas include multiple counties across Missouri and Illinois, with winds reaching 10 to 20 mph and gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 19 percent, significantly increasing the risk of rapid wildfire spread.
Officials warn that any fires that develop could spread quickly and become difficult to control. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and exercise caution with any open flames. Dry conditions combined with strong winds make it especially hazardous for brush fires and wildfires to ignite and grow uncontrollably.
The warning includes key regions such as St. Louis, Jefferson, Franklin, and Lincoln counties in Missouri, along with Madison, Monroe, and St. Clair counties in Illinois. The National Weather Service advises residents to secure outdoor objects that could be blown by the wind and to stay alert for any emergency fire updates.
Authorities emphasize that a Red Flag Warning indicates critical fire weather conditions and should not be taken lightly. Residents are encouraged to report any signs of fire immediately to local emergency services.
