Missoula, MT – Snowy and hazardous travel conditions are expected to develop across western Montana beginning Thursday afternoon and continuing into Saturday, as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for mountain areas surrounding Missoula.
According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, the advisory begins at 1 p.m. Thursday and continues through 11 a.m. MST Saturday for the Southern Clearwater Mountains, Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains, and the Lower Clark Fork Region. Snow accumulations of 9 to 15 inches are expected at higher elevations, while 5 to 9 inches of snow could fall at mountain passes including Lolo Pass, Lost Trail Pass, and Lookout Pass.
Forecasters say snow will begin Thursday afternoon and intensify at times through Friday, creating hazardous travel conditions, especially during the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. Winds gusting between 35 and 40 miles per hour may further reduce visibility and cause drifting snow in exposed areas.
The advisory impacts several major travel corridors, including U.S. Highway 12 from Lowell to Lolo Pass, U.S. Highway 93 from Sula to Lost Trail Pass, and Interstate 90 from Lookout Pass to Haugan. Communities near affected areas include Lolo, Elk City, Dixie, and parts of the Bitterroot Valley.
Officials warn that moderate winter weather impacts are likely, including slippery roads, reduced visibility, and possible travel delays or closures over higher terrain. Infrastructure disruptions may also occur if snow accumulates rapidly.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and carry winter emergency supplies if traveling through mountain passes. Motorists should check the latest road conditions by calling 511 before heading out.
Snow is expected to taper off Saturday morning, though lingering slick spots may remain at higher elevations even after the advisory expires.
