Western Montana and parts of northern Idaho are bracing for significant snowfall as a series of Winter Weather Advisories take effect starting early Wednesday. Accumulations ranging from 1 to 10 inches are expected, depending on elevation, with higher terrain and mountain passes likely to see the most severe impacts.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Missoula, advisories for areas including the West Glacier Region, Kootenai/Cabinet Region, Lower Clark Fork Region, Bitterroot Mountains, and Clearwater Mountains will begin Wednesday morning. Valley areas could see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while mountainous areas may experience 3 to 6 inches, with isolated totals exceeding 10 inches.
The NWS warns of hazardous travel conditions, particularly along major highways such as U.S. 2, U.S. 93, and I-90, as well as key mountain passes like Marias Pass, Lookout Pass, and Lost Trail Pass. Commuters on Wednesday and Thursday morning are advised to exercise caution and monitor conditions closely.
The advisories will remain in effect through late Thursday morning for most areas, with disruptions to normal activities and infrastructure closures possible in the most impacted regions. Travelers are encouraged to check road conditions by dialing 511 and to avoid non-essential travel in affected zones.
