JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi stays locked in a stretch of hot, dry weather through the weekend, with afternoon highs across the state climbing into the low to mid-90s. Residents will have to wait until midweek for any real relief, when a cold front is expected to increase rain chances.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, rain remains scarce through Monday, with only 5 to 15 percent odds across most of the region. By Tuesday, storm chances rise to 25 to 30 percent, peaking near 40 percent Wednesday as the front moves in.

Cities including Jackson, Greenwood, and Hattiesburg will feel the heat most with highs around 94 to 96 through Sunday. Brookhaven, Natchez, and Vicksburg follow close behind, all holding in the mid-90s before gradually cooling into the 80s by late week.

The heat may stress vulnerable groups, so health officials recommend limiting time outdoors, staying hydrated, and checking on neighbors without air conditioning.

Drier weather will dominate through early next week, but officials caution drivers to be alert for heavier downpours and possible slick roads starting Tuesday night. Additional advisories could be issued as the front approaches.
