JACKSON, Miss. – A night of dense fog followed by a sharp freeze is ahead for much of central and northern Mississippi, with both visibility hazards and subfreezing temperatures expected through early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday, reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less in areas along I-55, U.S. 82, and U.S. 49 from Yazoo City to Starkville and Columbus. Drivers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra following distance.

Once the fog lifts Sunday morning, a surge of Arctic air will arrive by nightfall. A Freeze Warning is in effect from midnight Sunday night through 9 a.m. Monday for central and northern Mississippi as well as southeast Arkansas. Temperatures are expected to fall to around 29°F, cold enough to kill tender plants and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Cities under the warning include Jackson, Greenwood, Greenville, Yazoo City, Grenada, Starkville, Columbus, and Canton. Agricultural officials note the cold will likely end the growing season across the Delta and Golden Triangle regions. Residents are encouraged to cover pipes, bring pets indoors, and protect plants before sunset Sunday.

The cold pattern will ease gradually by midweek, with daytime highs rebounding into the upper 50s.
