Hattiesburg, MS – The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for parts of south Mississippi this afternoon as severe storms move in from the west. The alert, designated Tornado Watch 641, will remain in effect until 6 p.m. CST Tuesday.
According to the NWS Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, the watch area includes Greene, Perry, and Wayne counties, where atmospheric conditions are becoming favorable for tornado development. Meteorologists warn that scattered thunderstorms forming along a warm front could quickly rotate and produce tornadoes or damaging wind gusts.
The affected region includes communities near Leakesville, Richton, and Waynesboro, as well as portions of Highways 45 and 98, where travel could be impacted during the afternoon commute. Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts closely and be ready to seek shelter if warnings are issued.
The Mobile and Birmingham Weather Service offices are coordinating coverage of this developing severe weather event. Forecasters caution that the watch area may shift eastward through the evening as the storm system continues to intensify across the Gulf region.
Stay weather-aware, charge mobile devices, and keep multiple ways to receive warnings as storms continue into tonight.
