Mississippi greets the morning with a sharp winter edge, as cold air settles across central and northern counties before sunrise. Frost glistens on lawns, breath fogs the air, and early drivers feel the sting stepping outside.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. across much of the state. Wind chills dropped into the teens, with actual temperatures ranging from the mid-teens north to the lower 20s near Jackson. Prolonged exposure can lead to frostbite or hypothermia.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, protect pets, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Drivers should watch for patchy frost and slick bridges during the morning commute, especially in shaded areas.

Conditions improve quickly by afternoon. Sunshine pushes highs into the mid-40s, helping thaw frost but setting up a familiar December risk. Melted moisture may refreeze after sunset as temperatures fall back into the upper 20s tonight.

Tuesday turns noticeably milder, with highs climbing into the mid-50s and frost possible early. By Wednesday, highs reach the mid-60s under partly sunny skies as southerly winds strengthen. Meteorologists are tracking a developing system that brings showers late Wednesday night.

Thursday marks the biggest shift. Showers become more likely by afternoon, with gusty winds and highs soaring into the low 70s. Wet roads and changing conditions could affect travel, especially during early holiday trips. Cooler air follows Thursday night, keeping a close watch on slick spots if roads remain damp.

Looking toward the weekend, temperatures stay mild for December, with highs near 70 Saturday and lingering rain chances. Sunday trends warm and partly sunny, keeping winter’s grip uneven for now.
