Mississippi – Cold air presses hard across the region as frost glistens on grass and rooftops under clearing skies. Jackets feel thinner than usual, and the wind carries a sharp edge that signals what’s coming next. The most dangerous cold of the season is lining up, with conditions expected to worsen quickly by Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Saturday afternoon. Wind chills could drop as low as 2 degrees below zero in northern parts of the area, with single-digit wind chills possible farther south. Strong northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph will drive the cold deeper and make it feel even harsher.

Friday stays mostly cloudy with highs near the mid-40s, but temperatures fall fast after sunset. By Saturday morning, readings hover near the upper 20s while wind chills plunge. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Pipes, especially in older homes, face a higher risk of freezing and rupture.

Travel conditions remain mostly dry, but the cold creates hazards of its own. Vehicles may struggle to start, and drivers along I-55 and I-20 should be prepared for sudden wind gusts that reduce control, especially on elevated roadways.

Saturday night stays clear and frigid, with lows near the mid-teens. Winds slowly ease, but the cold lingers into Sunday morning. Temperatures rebound slightly Sunday afternoon, though it will still feel like winter. By early next week, milder air begins to return, and precipitation chances remain low.

Take steps now to protect pets, plants, and plumbing. Limit time outdoors Saturday and check on vulnerable neighbors. How cold did it feel where you live?
