Jackson, MS – Mississippi is bracing for its coldest temperatures of the season as a significant freeze is expected late Monday night into early Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.

Forecasters warn that temperatures will fall below 28°F for several hours across much of central and southern Mississippi, potentially causing widespread damage to unprotected vegetation. Areas including Jackson, Vicksburg, Brookhaven, and Meridian are under a Level 3 (Significant) freeze risk, while parts of the Mississippi Delta and northeast Louisiana face a Level 2 (Elevated) freeze threat.

The freeze is expected to begin after 9 p.m. Monday and last through about 8 a.m. Tuesday, with calm winds and clear skies allowing for rapid cooling overnight. Forecasters note this could be a killing freeze, ending the growing season for many areas.

Residents are urged to cover sensitive plants, bring pets indoors, and drain or insulate exposed pipes ahead of the cold snap. Temperatures are forecast to slowly rebound midweek, but another cold night may follow Tuesday before a warming trend returns by late week.
