Jackson, MS – Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across northern Mississippi this evening, with the potential for damaging wind gusts and large hail. The National Weather Service has issued a “Slight Risk” for areas north of Interstate 20, including cities like Greenwood, Eupora, and Columbus, where storms could produce wind speeds of up to 70 mph and hail as large as golf balls.
According to the National Weather Service, the storms are set to begin around 6 PM and will last until midnight. The risk extends to the northernmost regions of Mississippi, where conditions are ripe for severe weather. A “Marginal Risk” of severe storms is in place for the rest of the state, including Jackson, Meridian, and Vicksburg, with possible wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.
Today, temperatures across the state will climb into the low 80s under mostly sunny skies. However, showers and thunderstorms will develop by early evening, with the greatest risk of severe weather in the northeast. Residents are advised to stay alert and monitor weather updates throughout the evening.
For those in affected areas, ensure all outdoor objects are secured and prepare for potential power outages. Drivers should avoid traveling during the storms, especially in areas with heavy rainfall and wind gusts.
