Jackson, MS – A portion of northwestern Mississippi faces a heightened risk of severe weather Thursday afternoon and evening, as forecasters warn of damaging wind gusts and large hail in parts of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms has been issued for areas including Greenwood, Greenville, and Hamburg. These locations could experience wind gusts strong enough to cause damage and hail ranging in size from quarters to golf balls.
The surrounding region, including Yazoo City, Eupora, and extending southwest toward Bastrop and Winnsboro, falls under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5). These areas may still encounter isolated severe storms with the potential for damaging winds and hail up to quarter-size.
Forecasters emphasize the timing of these threats will occur Thursday afternoon into the evening, urging residents in the affected regions to stay weather-aware and monitor local alerts.
While widespread tornado activity is not currently forecast, the possibility of rapidly developing strong storms warrants close attention, especially in the Slight Risk zone. Outdoor activities and travel in northwestern Mississippi and northeastern Louisiana could be impacted during peak storm hours.
