Wayne County, Mississippi – Fires could spread out of control within minutes starting at 9 a.m. Sunday as powerful winds and critically low humidity grip southeast Mississippi, putting homes, woods and roadways at risk through early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for Wayne, Perry, Greene, Stone and George counties. Northwest winds will increase to 15 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph. Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 17 percent, creating an environment where even a small spark can ignite dry vegetation.
State forestry officials warn that debris burning, campfires and equipment sparks could quickly trigger fast-moving grass or brush fires. Open areas along U.S. 98, Mississippi 26 and rural county roads are especially vulnerable, where winds can push flames across fields and toward structures.
Residents should avoid all outdoor burning, secure trailer chains to prevent roadway sparks and delay any activity involving open flames. Keep water sources nearby if working outdoors and report smoke immediately to 911.
Conditions are expected to improve after sunset as winds ease and humidity slowly recovers, but elevated fire danger could persist into early next week if dry weather continues. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions redevelop.
