Jackson, MS – Gray skies and a damp breeze are set to roll across central Mississippi this weekend, signaling a noticeable shift toward colder, wetter weather as post-Thanksgiving travel ramps up. Umbrellas and jackets will be smart companions Saturday as a developing system pushes showers into the region by late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, Saturday’s high will climb to around 60°F before a line of showers moves through the Jackson metro area. Rain chances increase after sunset, with 60–90% odds of showers Saturday night and scattered thunderstorms possible into early Sunday. Roads may turn slick, and localized ponding could slow travelers returning north on I-55 or east along I-20 late in the day.

By Sunday, lingering showers and brisk north winds will pull in cooler air, marking the start of a broader December cold pattern spreading across much of the central and eastern U.S. Highs will hover in the mid-50s, with lows in the mid-30s by Monday morning — cool enough for patchy frost in low-lying areas.

Meteorologists say this system is an early sign of the below-normal temperature trend expected from December 2–6, when a deep trough could deliver a more significant cold snap. The first week of December may bring biting mornings and higher rainfall chances across Mississippi, possibly stretching into the Tennessee Valley.

Residents should plan for wet travel Saturday, keep layers handy for cooler mornings, and watch for changing conditions early next week.
