Jackson, Mississippi – Central Mississippi residents are facing life-threatening heat stress today, with heat index values climbing as high as 110°F in areas like Jackson, Yazoo City, and Brookhaven.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Heat Advisory is now in effect for much of central and southwestern Mississippi, where “Elevated (Level 2)” heat risks are expected to last through Friday evening. High temperatures will peak in the mid-90s, but humidity will push perceived temperatures well into the triple digits. The most dangerous window for heat-related illness is from noon until 7 p.m.

Cities in the Elevated zone include Jackson, Vicksburg, Yazoo City, and Natchez. In these areas, prolonged outdoor activity could quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Even areas in the “Limited (Level 1)” risk zone, including Meridian and Columbus, will see heat indices near 105°F. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous work outside, and never leave people or pets in parked vehicles.

This is the first widespread heat advisory of the season for Mississippi. Families are advised to check on elderly neighbors and ensure pets have access to shade and water.

Heat advisories remain active through Friday evening, with more alerts possible this weekend.
