Mississippi starts the day under a dark, unsettled sky as rain drums steadily on rooftops and puddles spread across parking lots. Water collects fast along curbs, and creeks rise quietly, signaling a developing flood threat that could worsen as the day goes on.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Flood Watch is in effect from early morning through this evening for much of central, south-central, and east-central Mississippi. Repeated rounds of heavy rain may drop 2 to 3 inches quickly, with isolated totals reaching 6 inches where storms train over the same areas. Urban neighborhoods, low-lying roads, and poor drainage zones face the highest risk.

Jackson sits squarely in the impact zone. Major routes like I-20, I-55, and U.S. 49 may see water pooling during heavier downpours, especially by midday and into the afternoon. Storm drains can clog with debris, allowing water to rise faster than drivers expect. Even brief sunshine won’t solve runoff issues once soils become saturated.

Thunderstorms remain possible at times, adding bursts of intense rain and gusty winds. Conditions may deteriorate quickly after heavier cells pass. Drivers should slow down, avoid flooded streets, and never attempt to cross water-covered roadways.

Rain gradually tapers later tonight as the system slides east. Cooler, drier air arrives Saturday, offering a break before a colder pattern settles in. By Sunday morning, lows dip into the upper 20s, raising concerns for lingering water freezing on bridges and shaded roads.
