Jackson, Mississippi – Mississippi residents are battling dangerous, record-setting heat today, as the National Weather Service warns of a heat index climbing to 115°F in several communities through 8 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect until 8 p.m. for west and central Mississippi, stretching into northeast Louisiana and southern Arkansas. Central, east, and south Mississippi—including Jackson, Greenville, and Natchez—face heat index values between 110–115°F. High temperatures across the region will reach the mid to upper 90s, but dangerous humidity levels are pushing “feels like” readings into life-threatening territory.
Jackson, Vicksburg, and Greenville are among the hardest-hit areas today. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on elderly family members or neighbors. Local agencies report increased calls for heat-related illnesses, and power usage is expected to surge as air conditioning demand peaks. If you don’t have AC, seek a public cooling center or library. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and keep water on hand at all times.
This is the most extreme heat event of July so far and could rival record temperatures set in previous years. Warnings will stay in effect until 8 p.m. tonight, and additional advisories may be issued if dangerous heat persists into Wednesday.
