Jackson, Miss. – Dangerously high heat will grip Mississippi through Tuesday evening, with heat index values reaching up to 115 degrees and posing a serious risk of heat-related illness.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for central and western Mississippi, along with portions of southeast Arkansas and northeast Louisiana. The advisory covers communities including Jackson, Vicksburg, Greenville, Yazoo City, and Port Gibson.

Officials warn that prolonged exposure could lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Drivers are reminded not to leave children or pets in parked vehicles, where interior temperatures can become lethal within minutes. Power outages and strained air-conditioning use are possible during peak afternoon hours.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and limit outdoor activities to early morning or evening. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency also recommends checking on elderly neighbors and those without reliable cooling.

The heat threat is expected to ease midweek as storms develop, but another round of near-100-degree highs will persist into late week.
