Jackson, Miss. – Thick fog has settled across much of Mississippi and parts of northeast Louisiana early Saturday, cutting visibility down to a quarter mile in some areas and creating hazardous driving conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. for a wide stretch of the region, including Jackson, Vicksburg, Meridian, Starkville, Columbus, and surrounding communities. The advisory also extends into northeast Louisiana cities such as Bastrop and Tallulah.

The fog is expected to lift by mid-morning, but until then, motorists should expect sudden changes in visibility on interstates and highways, especially along I-20 from Vicksburg through Jackson to Meridian and U.S. 82 near Columbus and Starkville. Law enforcement officials urge drivers to slow down, keep headlights on low beam, and leave extra space between vehicles.

Localized delays are possible near bridges, river valleys, and low-lying areas where fog tends to linger. School buses and early commuters may be most affected during the morning rush.

Conditions are expected to improve by late morning as the fog burns off, but similar patchy fog could develop again overnight into Sunday.
