Jackson, Miss. – Damaging wind gusts could sweep across southern Mississippi this afternoon as isolated severe storms move through the region, prompting a Marginal (Level 1) risk for areas including Natchez, Brookhaven, and Hattiesburg.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the primary threats include gusty winds strong enough to knock down limbs and unsecured objects, as well as hail up to quarter size. The risk zone hugs the southern border of the state, with storms expected to peak between 2 and 6 p.m.

Local impacts may include brief power outages and dangerous travel conditions on U.S. Highways 98 and 84. While the storm coverage will remain scattered, residents should remain alert to rapidly changing weather, especially in rural areas with limited shelter access. Winds could reach 40 to 50 mph in isolated pockets.

Today marks the final round of stormy weather before a dry and sunny weekend arrives across central and southern Mississippi. Highs will climb into the low 80s today before rising to near 90 degrees by early next week.

Storm alerts remain in place through this evening, and residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and monitor local updates as conditions evolve.
