Jackson, Mississippi – Mississippians should prepare now for repeated rounds of steady rain March 5-11 that could flood low-lying roads and push rivers higher across the state.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, Mississippi falls within a 60 to 70 percent chance of above-normal precipitation during the March 5-11 period. The state also carries a 90 to 100 percent chance of well above-normal temperatures, signaling a warm and moisture-rich pattern across the Deep South.

In Jackson, Gulfport, Hattiesburg and Tupelo, most precipitation will fall as rain, with periods of moderate to heavy downpours possible. Warmer air will dominate through the period, increasing runoff efficiency and limiting any risk of wintry precipitation.

Heavier rainfall could create ponding along Interstates 55, 20 and 10, especially in urban areas and spots with poor drainage. The Pearl, Pascagoula and Mississippi rivers may see noticeable rises if storms repeatedly track over the same counties.

Residents should clear storm drains, secure outdoor items and avoid driving through water-covered roads. The wet pattern continues through March 11, and additional flood advisories could be issued if rainfall totals trend higher.
