Jackson, Mississippi – Residents across central and southwest Mississippi could face flooded roads and rapidly rising water levels over the next 48 hours as multiple rounds of heavy rain move across the region through Tuesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, portions of central and southwest Mississippi are under an Elevated Level 2 flood threat, where 3 to 5 inches of rainfall, with locally higher amounts, could fall in a relatively short period. Forecasters warn that intense rainfall rates may quickly overwhelm drainage systems and lead to flash flooding.

The highest concern stretches from areas near Vicksburg, Natchez, Brookhaven and Jackson, where repeated thunderstorms could produce significant rainfall accumulations. Some roads may become flooded or impassable, particularly in low-lying locations and urban areas with poor drainage. Emergency managers also warn that some structures could be threatened if heavier rainfall repeatedly impacts the same communities.

Elsewhere across eastern and northern Mississippi, including areas near Philadelphia, Meridian, Laurel, Greenwood and Columbus, a Limited Level 1 flood threat remains in place. These locations could still see 1 to 3 inches of rain, with localized higher totals capable of producing isolated flash flooding.

Drivers should avoid flooded roadways, monitor changing conditions and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. Heavy rainfall is expected in several rounds from now through Tuesday night, and additional flood advisories or flash flood warnings may be issued as storms develop.

Warnings remain possible through Tuesday night as the flood threat continues across Mississippi.
