Jackson, Miss. – Mississippians are in for a sweltering and soggy stretch as dangerous heat combines with near-daily rain chances through at least Wednesday, June 19. Heat index values could soar above 105°F in cities like Greenwood, Vicksburg, and Jackson, while several rounds of thunderstorms could dump up to 4 inches of rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a persistent upper-level pattern and deep tropical moisture are fueling widespread afternoon storms and elevated humidity across the region. Rain chances remain above 60% daily in Greenville, Hattiesburg, and Starkville through early next week, with peak rainfall totals topping 3 inches in some areas.
The compounded heat and humidity are raising health concerns. Jackson is forecast to reach 106°F in heat index values, while Vicksburg could feel as hot as 107°F. Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat, hydrate regularly, wear light clothing, and avoid strenuous activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Localized flooding may affect low-lying roads and creeks, especially in areas already saturated. Those with outdoor plans should monitor alerts and prepare for sudden storms.
Warnings remain in effect through at least Wednesday, and additional advisories may follow if rainfall totals climb.
