Jackson, MS – The Mississippi Valley is enduring a brutal heat wave as temperatures soar into the 90s and 100s, with heat indices reaching a dangerous 115°F on Thursday. This extreme heat is expected to continue through Friday, putting residents at risk for heat-related illnesses, particularly those without access to cooling.
According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, the combination of high temperatures and intense humidity is creating hazardous conditions across the region. With nighttime lows only dropping into the mid-70s, there will be little relief from the oppressive heat. Residents are urged to stay indoors, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable individuals.
Despite the sweltering conditions, relief is on the horizon as a cold front is expected to move in by Labor Day weekend. This front will bring cooler temperatures, dropping highs into the 80s and 90s, offering much-needed respite. Until then, officials warn that the risk of heat-related health issues remains high, and precautionary measures should be taken.
