Jackson, Mississippi – Central Mississippi is under threat from severe thunderstorms tonight, with damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph expected to impact major population centers including Jackson, Meridian, and Brandon through 10:45 p.m. Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued multiple Severe Thunderstorm Warnings as the storms push southward at 35 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the storm line was located near Phoenix, Gluckstadt, and Standing Pine around 9:09 p.m., tracking southward toward the Jackson metro. Radar indicated strong winds capable of damaging roofs, uprooting trees, and downing power lines across Rankin, Hinds, Smith, and Scott counties.
City-specific impacts include Flowood, Pearl, and Brandon being hit around 9:30 p.m., followed closely by Richland, Raymond, and Byram. High winds could make roads hazardous, particularly along I-20 and I-55. Flashing debris, power outages, and falling limbs are possible.
Residents are urged to shelter in interior rooms on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Charge mobile devices and avoid non-essential travel until the line of storms passes. Emergency managers recommend staying alert for possible additional warnings or watches as the system progresses.
