Jackson, Miss. – More than 40 counties across Mississippi are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9 p.m. Sunday, with damaging winds and large hail possible as storms intensify through the afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, areas from the Delta to the northeast corner of the state—stretching from Tunica to Itawamba—could see wind gusts over 60 mph and hail larger than quarters. The watch was issued at 2:05 p.m. CDT and includes cities like Greenville, Oxford, Starkville, and Tupelo.
Residents in counties such as Desoto, Lee, Lowndes, and Oktibbeha should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Downed trees and power outages are possible, especially in rural areas with saturated ground from recent rain. Drivers along I-55, Highway 82, and the Natchez Trace Parkway are urged to use caution if storms move in during the evening commute.
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency advises securing loose outdoor items and charging mobile devices in case of power loss. Stay indoors and avoid windows during strong storms.
The severe threat is expected to diminish by late evening, but additional alerts may follow if storms continue to develop across the region.
