Cedar Rapids, IA – A mix of light snow and freezing temperatures is making travel hazardous across eastern Iowa and parts of northwest Illinois today. Commuters are warned of slick conditions, particularly on untreated roads, including I-80 near Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), visibility may drop to a mile at times due to light snowfall, with roads partially covered in snow during the morning commute. Accumulations are expected to range from 0.5 to 1.5 inches across most areas, with isolated spots in northwest Illinois seeing up to 2 inches.
Motorists should reduce speeds and leave extra room between vehicles, especially on ramps and bridges, which may become ice-covered. Snow is expected to taper off late tonight, though untreated surfaces will remain slick overnight.
The five-day outlook shows clearing skies starting Thursday, with high temperatures in the low 20s north and near 30 south. Thursday night will be bitterly cold, with lows dipping into single digits. Friday will bring increased cloud cover but dry conditions, followed by slightly warmer temperatures into the weekend. Saturday may reach the upper 30s in some areas, offering a reprieve from the cold snap.
